OPINION: Why it’s time we said ‘I do’ to marriage equality

SAME-SEX marriage supporters accused council of ‘‘acting illegally’’ at an emotion-charged marriage equality rally outside Newcastle City Hall on Tuesday night.

More than 70 people – including members of the Newcastle gay and lesbian community, same-sex advocacy groups and Newcastle councillors – gathered in Civic Park prior to the council’s scheduled meeting.

Greens councillor Michael Osborne said a second motion to adopt a resolution to support marriage equality in Newcastle had been blocked from going to council and was absent from the agenda.

‘‘The Liberal Party at the last meeting moved that that motion not even be considered, not even be debated and just deferred for another day,’’ he said.

‘‘So I recently put in another motion, making it very simple, that Newcastle Council support marriage equality

‘‘But that motion was blocked from going to this council meeting.

‘‘There is no authority under the local government act nor was there delegation from the elected council to do so.

‘‘All motions that come from councillors must be accepted as long as they are within the required time frame, which my motion was.’’

STORY: Newcastle Council deferral ‘disgrace’

Cr Osborne raised the motion again during last night’s meeting but councillors decided it was not ‘‘urgent’’ and could not be debated.

Rally MC Debbi Long said she was ‘‘horrified’’ the motion had been blocked and said the council was ‘‘simply being asked to act within their scope of practice and provide community leadership.’’

Miss LaBang, from the Newcastle Rainbow Army, told the gathering the council’s attitude towards the coloured footpaths and their instance they be removed were ‘‘an act of social prejudice against the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer community’’.

Earlier on, supporters had furiously scrawled two vibrant DIY rainbows in the concrete in Civic Park while others wrote personalised messages of support like: ‘‘gay is the way’’ and ‘‘love is equality’’. Rumour had it the chalk being used was from a special batch, made especially for the event because it was ‘‘extremely bright and difficult to remove’’.
