Who’s your favourite superman (scroll down for poll)

HE is known to soar over large skyscrapers in the fictional city of Metropolis, but today Superman will fly into people’s minds at Toronto Library.

The library will host a talk on the story of Superman from comics to movies.

The talk coincides with the release of the new Superman movie, Man of Steel, which opens in the Hunter today.

Lifelong Superman fan Phillip Corben, who has been reading comics about the superhero since he was 10, will give the talk.

Mr Corben said Superman was a mythical figure.

‘‘He was extremely popular in the years of World War II,’’ Mr Corben said.

‘‘It’s the type of stories that inspire people to do things they thought were impossible.’’

Superman had a resurgence in popularity in ‘‘the late 50s to early 60s in America’’.

‘‘It was a time of the Cold War, the Cuban missile crisis and threats people had never faced before and could never have imagined in a previous time.’’

Toronto Library branch manager Vincent Dale said Superman possibly ‘‘comforts people who have concerns about an uncertain world’’.

‘‘Superman is a phenomenon that has lasted for a long time,’’ Mr Dale said.

‘‘Each generation has interpreted him in its own way.’’

Anyone can attend the talk, which starts at 11am.
